Asopos
was an ancient city with a safe harbour and its own currency.
It was a member of the League of Free Laconians. In the
region of Phiniki there were temples dedicated to Apollo
Hyperteleatas and to Asclepios. There was also an ancient
city at Plytra, but this was submerged by a strong earthquake
in 375 BC. Its remains can still be seen in the sea with
the naked eye.
